I categorize my life in 2 stages: BF (Before Flood) and AF (After Flood)
For several years, I suffered from back pain. I tried almost every alternative therapy to help ease the pain. Although some worked, the relief was temporary. Unfortunately, the pain would slowly return a few days later. It was only after a doctor quoted me $10,000 for treatment (which may or may not work) that I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I discovered Floatation Therapy while researching natural ways to help back pain. The closest float center was located in New Orleans. So, for my wedding anniversary, my husband, Curtis, and I decided to try floating. My first float, like many other first-time floaters, was just…. okay. I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not. It wasn’t until a few days later that I realized my back did not hurt. Actually, the pain disappeared for 2 months. I was hooked!
We tried floating at two other locations. It was the third float when I decided to open a floatation therapy center in Baton Rouge.
I’ve always loved water. The beach is my happy place! However, my love for water changed on August 14, 2016, when we received 4 feet of water in our house due to The Great Flood. Slowly, I began to notice water everywhere- condensation on cups, droplets on the ground and water under bridges. I had to force myself to take a bath everyday. Anxiety was high. Anxiety was overwhelming. Anxiety sucks.
I knew what helped anxiety….floating! But how do you float in 10-inches of water, alone, when water is the main reason for anxiety? I’ll be honest- I didn’t float. I couldn’t float. Not yet.
One day, a few months later, while working at Fleauxt, I skimmed through our community journal, where our guests write about their experiences. This particular entry grabbed my attention and changed my thinking:
“Water took my home. Water gave me peace”
Four months after the flood, I stepped back into the float tub, shut the door, turned out the lights and drifted away. I didn’t think about the water, the flood or anything else.
It was exactly what I needed.
