How To Prepare For Your First Float

Over the years, we've met a lot of people who have never tried floatation therapy. A common question we are asked is, "What can I expect?" Well, we can't really answer that question. We can't tell you what to expect, since it is such an individual experience. We like to avoid providing expectations whenever possible so that people aren’t influenced by what someone else says. Not only will it be different for you than it is for anyone else, each one of your floats will be different.

However, we can tell you how to prepare for your float. Here are a few tips:

1. Skip The Caffeine & Limit Liquids

It's a good idea to avoid drinking caffeine (coffee, tea, sodas, and/or energy drinks) for several hours before floating. We want you to be able to relax! And since caffeine is a stimulant, consuming it before your session can wreck your float.

Plus, you can't relax if you have to pee! If you happen to drink too much before your float, you will need to exit the float tub, dry off, then walk down the hall to the restroom. This will cut into your time and interrupt your relaxing float session.

2. Avoid Shaving

Don’t shave or wax the day of your float. The epsom salt will irritate freshly shaven skin for a few minutes (or more), which could prevent you from fully relaxing.

3. Eat A Light Meal/Snack

Eat a light meal/snack about an hour or so before you float to keep your stomach quiet. The last thing you want is growling stomach sounds interrupting your float.

Avoid eating a heavy meal prior to your appointment. The sounds of the digestive system could be a distraction.

4. Be Still

Many first-time floaters mention they hit the sides of the tub during their session. Here are few tips to prevent that from happening:

  • Insert your earplugs prior to showering. If you put them in when your ears are wet, they will slip out during the float, causing a distraction.

  • Once you enter the float tub, sit down and slowly lay back. Reach your arms out to touch the sides of the tub. When the water has calmed down, move your arms slowly to your comfortable float position.

  • Let geaux. Allow all the tension you are holding to melt into the water. Let your mind wander. This is probably the only time in your life when you've been alone with just you and your thoughts (nothing else). Whether you meditate during your session or plan out your whole life, it's okay...this is your time.

5. Plan Time To Reflect After Your Session

We created our Chill Out area for you. We want you "Chill Out" before you are whisked away into the real world where there are traffic jams, phones ringing, people demanding your attention and other common day stressors. Take time to reflect on your float experience. Grab a cup of water to rehydrate. Jot down a note in our Fleauxt Journal. Just chill out!
