A brief history of Halotherapy (Dry Salt Therapy)
You may have visited Fleauxt and enjoyed the wonderful benefits of Dry Salt Therapy (Halotherapy), or you might still be new to the unique experience. Either way, you may be wondering just how being in a salt environment came to be the therapy it is today.
Halotherapy is well known in Europe where it has been standard medical practice for over 20 years. However, the first mentions of spa resorts using this type of a therapy can actually be traced all the way back to the twelfth century in Poland.

The salt mine pictured above was built in the 13th century. You can actually take tours of this mine, which looks like it would be an amazing experience. This is just one of the many salt mines across Europe that still exist today.
It was actually monks who are recorded first noticing the effects of salt caves. They noticed, when they were trying to help people with respiratory issues, that their symptoms would significantly improve if they sent them to a natural salt cavern.
After these claims circulated for a few hundred years, Dr. Felix Bochkowsky, the state authority for occupational health in Polish industry during the 1840s, saw that while metal and coal miners battled relentless, deadly respiratory ailments, workers in salt mines were healthier than average people, let alone other miners.
Then, during World War II, salt mines in Germany were used as bomb shelters. During bombings, people often had to remain in the mines for extended periods of time, breathing in the salt dust. Upon leaving, many asthmatics were able to breathe easier.
Research continued in the 1950s in the USSR where Halotherapy, as it's known today, finally became a common reality. Halotherapy salt chambers first opened to the public in the 1960s in Eastern Europe. They continued to be built and are still in use all over Europe today.
With such a rich history, it's so cool that we can take advantage of this therapy today right here in North America. We're so happy to offer it at Fleauxt in the capital city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana!
